Chapter Sixteen

Lexi tilted her head back and raised her arms, stretching her body back over the top of her chair. After a long night of sexual escapades, she was deliciously sore. But hey, she wasn’t a complainer. In fact, she was more than willing to give those aching muscles another workout.

Playfully spinning in her chair for the second morning in a row, she felt like a flighty little girl who’d just gotten a pony for her birthday. Joe was so sweet and caring, smart and funny. And drop-dead gorgeous. She still felt his lips on hers, and between her thighs. Her skin heated as she recalled the touch of his beautiful hands, gentle and firm. Squeezing her legs together, she tried to dispel the empty achiness she felt—even now craving his body on top of her, his—

“Here we are!” Maggie burst in with a piping hot mug of coffee and set it in front of her.

And back to reality. “Thank you, Maggie. What’s our day look like?” She picked up the mug and blew across the top before taking a sip.

“Pretty steady this morning, but you’ve got a nice break at lunch. The afternoon doesn’t start until two.”

“Hmm.” Lexi scanned her schedule, recognizing a few names. Small towns. After a moment, she looked up. Maggie was watching her. She raised an eyebrow.

“You look good this morning. Refreshed. You must have gotten a good night’s sleep last night.”

“Yes, yes I did.” It was amazing the effects mind-blowing sex had on the body. Of course she wasn’t going to share that with this woman, who’d been like a mother to her.

Maggie crossed her arms over her chest. “That’s not all, though. You look happy. Content.”

“Yeah?” Damned if she didn’t feel that exact way. In fact, despite all the turmoil of the past few weeks, she couldn’t remember the last time she’d felt such … peace.

“Yeah.” Maggie studied her intently. “I don’t know what it is, but there’s something going on.”

Lexi shrugged and took another swallow of coffee. She managed to keep a smile from her lips.

“I guess if you’re not going to share, I’ll start filling your rooms.” Defeated, Maggie whisked her way out of the room.

The morning flew by, and much to Lexi’s surprise, there was little in the way of irritation or tedium. In fact, the only hitch had been the no-show of a patient she’d very much looked forward to seeing.

She found Maggie cleaning the last exam room. “Good job this morning, Maggie. You run a tight ship.”

“Thanks, Lexi.” She kept her voice low and checked around. “Don’t want anyone to hear me calling you by your first name. It might make some people angry.”

Lexi waved her off. “Listen, Jill Buchanan was a no-show. I’m a little worried about her. Can you give her a call and check on her for me?”

“Sure. Why don’t you go out for some lunch? We’ve got a nice long break.”

“I think I’ll do just that.” Lexi returned to her office and checked some messages before pausing to catch her breath.
