Chapter Sixteen
Lexi tilted her head back and raised her arms, stretching her body back over the top of her chair. After a long night of sexual escapades, she was deliciously sore. But hey, she wasnât a complainer. In fact, she was more than willing to give those aching muscles another workout.
Playfully spinning in her chair for the second morning in a row, she felt like a flighty little girl whoâd just gotten a pony for her birthday. Joe was so sweet and caring, smart and funny. And drop-dead gorgeous. She still felt his lips on hers, and between her thighs. Her skin heated as she recalled the touch of his beautiful hands, gentle and firm. Squeezing her legs together, she tried to dispel the empty achiness she feltâeven now craving his body on top of her, hisâ
âHere we are!â Maggie burst in with a piping hot mug of coffee and set it in front of her.
And back to reality. âThank you, Maggie. Whatâs our day look like?â She picked up the mug and blew across the top before taking a sip.
âPretty steady this morning, but youâve got a nice break at lunch. The afternoon doesnât start until two.â
âHmm.â Lexi scanned her schedule, recognizing a few names. Small towns. After a moment, she looked up. Maggie was watching her. She raised an eyebrow.
âYou look good this morning. Refreshed. You must have gotten a good nightâs sleep last night.â
âYes, yes I did.â It was amazing the effects mind-blowing sex had on the body. Of course she wasnât going to share that with this woman, whoâd been like a mother to her.
Maggie crossed her arms over her chest. âThatâs not all, though. You look happy. Content.â
âYeah?â Damned if she didnât feel that exact way. In fact, despite all the turmoil of the past few weeks, she couldnât remember the last time sheâd felt such ⦠peace.
âYeah.â Maggie studied her intently. âI donât know what it is, but thereâs something going on.â
Lexi shrugged and took another swallow of coffee. She managed to keep a smile from her lips.
âI guess if youâre not going to share, Iâll start filling your rooms.â Defeated, Maggie whisked her way out of the room.
The morning flew by, and much to Lexiâs surprise, there was little in the way of irritation or tedium. In fact, the only hitch had been the no-show of a patient sheâd very much looked forward to seeing.
She found Maggie cleaning the last exam room. âGood job this morning, Maggie. You run a tight ship.â
âThanks, Lexi.â She kept her voice low and checked around. âDonât want anyone to hear me calling you by your first name. It might make some people angry.â
Lexi waved her off. âListen, Jill Buchanan was a no-show. Iâm a little worried about her. Can you give her a call and check on her for me?â
âSure. Why donât you go out for some lunch? Weâve got a nice long break.â
âI think Iâll do just that.â Lexi returned to her office and checked some messages before pausing to catch her breath.
